My opinion on the hyped CB talk

We all want us to get another cb to magically come in here and stop qbs from throwing all over us.... i dont think we will see this magic cb appear, and in fact i think coughlin did the right thing by signing a new d backs coach....

hear me out on this.... look at the best franchise in football over the past few years, the new england patriots.... they stick in any guy imaginable at CB that can run and fit a scheme.. beacuse they have great linebackers, and a big strong d line... they press the other teams recievers and play a man over top, and it works no matter whos in the defensive backfield because they swarm linebackers and d linemen all over the opposing qb and they dont let the receiever get to the route in time.....

this being said, i think we have decent guys at cb, other then will allen who cant catch because that hurts when we drop easy ints... but i think we need to get some interior linemen to play with joseph or start over joseph, and def. get a few more speedy linebackers that we can move around and do stuff with....

i dont think drafting or signing a cb will magically help our secondary... and again the perfect example of this is the new england patriots..

i find that if you look around the league at the teams that stop the pass well, its because of the fact they have great lbs and d linemen just as much as it is they have a great cb... also to add a little to my point if u have a great dline and lbs, then a team cant run and u have them in passing downs where u know they are going to pass.... so we need to bring the heat with our lbs and awesome two d ends and press the recievers.... at cb u just need a guy with speed that can play a scheme...

if anything having our great two d ends might hurt our coaches thinking in a way... it makes them feel as if we dont need to bring pressure we can drop a lot of people and let strahan and osi do the damage... which they can a lot of times do, but at the same time it allows them to throw two double teams our way on osi and stra and lets the recievers run free and burn us for those big plays, with the qb having a lot of time....

so i know a lot of us giants fans are expecting big moves in the secondary, however i really dont think its gonna happen.... i would like to see us sign a lb or two that can really play and a d tackle that can really play, draft a cb whenever a good one falls our way, and i am not so against a wr in the first round...

our secondary looked pretty good when we started to gel after 4 games before our whole linebacker crew starter to get hurt, in fact our whole defense looked GREAT for about 6 games in a row, thats when we all starting thinking it was possible for us to do some damage in the playoffs... so add another good lb or two, and i think we have solved a lot of the problem

i think coughlin and the organization knows a little bit about what they are doing and we got a new D BACKS coach for a reason....

anyways i havnt heard this side of it yet and i definitely think this could be the answer what do we all think about this?

and for the record.. i just arrived from giants.com i have been reading around and see the fab 4 has made there way and that is just hilarious.... and i see some familiar faces that know a little bit about some football, anyways im giving it a shot... lets see what kinda response i get to this one......

I read your whole post. While it makes sense I have to wonder why you think you know so much more than the others that you claim know "a little bit about some FB". Not just FB but some FB no less.

Guest Nutty Sack

I agree 100%. Our interior line and linebackers can make the backfield invisible if they can dominate like our team of the mid 80's. Look at our backfield back then. No super star to be found. The answer is very simple we need to upgrade and I know we keep harping on one guy but listen. Osi or Strahan get double teamed on every play. Our interior guys should be having a field day and they are not.

Why you may ask?? Well because they are just no good. Yeah we've been surviving with him hoping against hope but it's time to move on. The minute you get rid of this guy and put anyone in it will be an instant upgrade. Now lets be sensible and stop day dreaming.

How can you say that the patriots "could just put anyone back there..."? If you forgot, they had Ty Law, probably the best CB of the past decade) as a staple of their defense for every part of their superbowl run. Yes he got injured during the 2004 season and they became a significantly worse team. Fortunately for them they had a strong all around team and were able to overcome it. Also they had Harrison at safety. By no means is that a shabby secondary.

Defensive pressure only works if your secondary gives them enough time to get to the QB... its a two way street. We have the DE's to do it, we just need to upgrade the secondary.

So cliff notes front seven>secondary

i agree i think that we do need a guy like D'Qwell Jackson who can play all 3 lb postions and yet another lb for depth

but i think we do need to add a corner and a saftey because Butler is not a starter in my eyes but can come in on long down situation and if you look at many of the games this year teams threw becasue they could not run on us or they were down early (rams, cardinals) so i think we need to add a servicable DB and a saftey I perfer Jason Allen who can also play corner some other member like Whitner who is very similar both would be aquried in the 2nd round

I would love to see Tank Williams and Will Witherspoon (very unlikely, since some posters are high on Ben Leber, maybe him and Tank). I'd rather upgrade CB through draft and look long term at that position and I actually REALLY, REALLY hope the Giants keep Allen and don't overpay for a new corner. It doesn't matter who we get, if its a vet. CB with good not great talent we'll be forced to pay him too much.

Eventually our new CB tandem will be Webster and Deloatch/1st or 2nd rd. CB pick

Actually, when the Giants were giving up a lot of passing yards the defense was playing soft. Notice how Lewis wasn't mad at all when asked about the high amount of passing yards given up. He just said that the DB's were playing smart and that he would take a win like 40-38 anyday, or something like that. The Giants have CB's that are better off in man coverage. You will see better results if they play more man than zone. That's why the Cardinals, the Saints, the Chargers, and the Rams. Afterwards he started to call more man and he actually let the CB's play tighter. Then the points and passing yardage went down and 3 weeks afterwards, the Giants played an extraordinary game vs the Redskins. Then the Defense was starting to get recognition. Yes the pressure was pretty good but if you watched the games closely and thoroughly, you would notice that there were plenty of times the QB had time but no one was open, plus there were several coverage sacks. This with Will Peterson out and Curtis Deloatch as the LCB and RCB in nickel defense and Webster as the LCB in nickel defense and with a team playing musical LBers.

I would really like it if Allen came back and the Giants would get some safeties, even though I think Jason Shivers could possibly play well enough to get positive attention. I personally think that the Giants would be fine with teh exact same group of CB's as they had this past year, if Peterson comes back at 100%. Experience alone makes players better. That was one problem, the Giants had a very young group in the secondary. They all have one full year (another year for the non-rookies) under their belt.
