Javy Lopez a Red Sock

Seriously, this was the best move the Red Sox could make. They're only responsible for his contract for the rest of the season so half of his salary for the year has likely been paid for and we prolly didn't have to give up much consider we were saving the Orioles money. There was no we we could start Mirabelli or Huckaby for 4-6 weeks so Lopez will help. I'll take his lesser defense for a possible decent bat in the lineup. Maybe a happier Lopez and a change of scenery will help him, you never know. The move helps the team, there's no doubting that.

yeah, cuz they have an all-star at his position

fair enough.

But if he was that good, you'd think he'd stay in the line up before this allstar became an allstar.

No matter how you slice it he wont be Varitek, but it is the best situation for him and the Sox. I dont care either way, we're still taking the division. :TU:

According to a team source, the Orioles will send $1 million of the $2.74 million remaining on Lopez's contract to Boston; the only obstacle to the deal being finalized is that the player the Red Sox are sending back to the Orioles still must pass through waivers. Lopez is expected to join the Red Sox on Friday in Tampa Bay.

well varitek wasn't having a varitek like season. he's batting .240 somethign with 11 homeruns. lopez is batting .265 with 8 homeruns. offensively it's a wash if you ask me--at least for this season

Agreed! This will help the team, there's no doubt about that.

his numbers are comparable to varitek. he's batting 20 points higher and only has 3 less homeruns.

he's far from the clubhouse leader that varitek is though. and anyone else think that his decline is due to steroids?

um isn't he the captain of the red sox.

Dont say he's the captain then try to justify javy lopez of all people to fill his shoes.

He'll never fill in Varitek's shoes in terms of being the captain of the team but Lopez is capable of filling in offensively and with Varitek's role as pretty much a disabled coach, maybe the harm won't be as big as it seems. You know that, Plow, stop trying to pick arguments.

yeah but thats not what you guys need. Your offense has not been a problem at all. And when the months of August and September come, the thing you need the most is pitching.

You need Varitek to help with the pitching, and Lopez was always criticized for the way he handled pitchers. Greg Maddux had his own personal catcher back with the braves, he didn't want lopez.

It's a telling sign that the orioles commited all that money to him, then commited a lot to another catcher just because they werent that confident in his abilities. They could have spent that money elsewhere but decided not to.
