Sox acquire Gagne

I'll bet they lose 1-0, 2-1, something like that tonight to Bedard. I never have a problem with shoring up the 'pen, especially with a guy like Gagne, but I really wanted Dye. He would've been exactly what they needed right now.

where exactly would dye have fit in? a platoon with drew?

you never know, maybe an extension won't be met with dye and the white sox and you could acquire him in the waiver period.

Whats the deal with Gabbard? I havn't had a chance to do much research on him yet but by going by MLB stats alone he looks good. 4-0 sub 4.00 era, what, 24 years old? Why would the Sox trade him just to keep gagne away from the Yanks?

Truthfully, I'd have benched Drew, huge contract and all, and made Dye the everyday rightfielder until further notice. I don't think that was their plan for him, though, which made their interest in Dye seem a little strange. He would be a huge improvement over Wily Mo Pena.

Well, he's looked real good so far, except for the end of his last start. I just think that the organization never had a whole lot of hope for him, and feels like they've seen the best of him these last few weeks. Plus Schilling is coming back, you have Lester and some good arms in the minors already. He doesn't fit into their plans.

Pfft, that's not why we did it! We did it so that we could improve what's already the best bullpen in the majors. It's a shame that Okajima gets knocked back a bit but Papelbon will close with Gagne spelling him. But honestly, Delcarmen-Okajima-Gagne-Papelbon in a playoff series, that's tough. Gabbard was a fringe prospect who had some major league success and Daniels ate him up. He's a soft tosser who was performing a bit over his head but should do okay as long as he keeps the ball on the ground. He was never ranked as highly as Brandon McCarthy, I'll tell you that. Both Gabbard and Murphy are "good" but nothing earth shattering and I give kudos to Theo for trading away players we don't need with our outfield glut and Schilling returning. The Red Sox also get draft picks after Gagne leaves to close.

Murphy will give you good defense though...need that? The player with the highest upside is definitely Engel Beltre.

Beltre was one of the more coveted amateur Dominican Republic signings last year, inking for $575,000 with the Red Sox. The outfielder is hitting .215/.314/.413 for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Only 17, he projects to be quite a power hitter, a five-tooler in every aspect.

I guess you got something for Gagne...

Not sure how they fit for you.

Apparently the Red Sox bullpen is nicknamed the Pirates of the Caribbean and they all have secret pirate names. They've already chosen one for when Gagne arrives.

i saw gabbard's start against cleveland and i really wasn't impressed at all, but that's just one start. they kept delcarman which was smart--i couldn't believe those rumors about the sox considering trading him

The Sox are going to be awfully hard to beat down the stretch and in the post season. The only thing they lack now is bats, which everyone knows will show up eventually. If I was a betting man, and didn't hate the Sox so much, I'd put money on them to take the pennant.

and after reading the details on how the Yanks could have had him, I'm glad it worked for you. Melky and Kennedy or Melky and one of the other 2 stud pitching prospects for him. That would have put the final nail in Cashman's coffin.

Not for Gagne alone right? I thought there was something in the works that would have sent you Tex and Gagne for Melky and Hughes or Joba and/or Kennedy? Something along those lines.

Last I heard, Texas wasn't letting go of Tex unless we coughed up Chamberlain or Hughes so Cashman hung up the deal. We were very close to getting Gagne, but Cashman found his mind after pondering the Melky/Kennedy proposal. I didn't hear anything about getting both and what it would entail, but I'm sure it was thought of.

i dont know, how much better could the red sox be? they already had a really good bullpen

edit: i think they're the best team in baseball with or without the trade

Now they're that much better. Scary thought, really. :brooding:
