Red Sox sign Brad Penny

Heard it on ESPN. A one year deal for $5 million with incentives. I think it's a very good move for the Red Sox. When Penny is at the top of his game he is ace-worthy. Having him at the back end of the rotation means that the Sox are very solid one through five, and it also means that likely, they will not be players for Lowe's services, meaning that my Mets still have the inside track on signing him.

Yahoo is still reporting it as a rumor, and besides, I can't see him helping anyone until he has some kind of surgery.

Penny was cut loose by the Los Angeles Dodgers in November following an injury-plagued 2008 campaign, but previously had been the team’s ace. Between 2006 and 2007, he went 32-13 with a 3.65 ERA and a pair of All-Star Game appearances - including a start in the 2006 contest.

However, he was sidelined off and on with right shoulder trouble this year as his ERA ballooned to a career-worst 6.27 in 19 appearances, including 17 starts. The club declined his option following the season.

Its always smart to sign pitchers who have a with history shoulder problems...just ask the yankees, Jaret Wright was awesome. If I were a GM, Id never sign a pitcher who has ever had any tpe of shouolder promblem. Its unlike any other type of injury, you almost never come back from them. Elbows are ok, shoulders are a red flag.

i haven't heard that rumor. would you like that deal?

I think I like that deal. Matt Cain is a very good pitcher..and he still very young, his best years are in front of him..and I predict he will be one of the best pitchers in baseball within the next 2 years.....but the giants need offense and they already of an ace on their staff right now and some nice talent for the rest of the rotation even without cain.
