Safeties coming along 'very slowly'

The New York Giants sat with a gaping hole at safety this offseason.

The void is currently being filled by rookies Landon Collins, Mykkele Thompson and Bennett Jackson (a converted corner), alongside third-year pro Cooper Taylor (coming off injury that forced him to miss all of 2014) -- second-year safety Nat Berhe has been out with a calf injury.

Finding a free safety to pair with the more box-oriented Collins seems to be a troubling task. Safeties coach Dave Merritt also pointed to a chemistry issue early in offseason workouts.

"The chemistry is what I'm really looking for right now," safeties coach Dave Merritt said Tuesday, via ESPN.com. "You can't have two cooks in the kitchen. I've had that with my wife and her mom. You can't have both of them in the kitchen. Somebody has to go sit down. So you need to have one leader back there, and that's what I'm still looking for. It's elusive. I'm searching for it. If it's Landon, great. If it's Cooper, great. If it's Nat, great. If it's Mykkele, great. But I need to have a leader come up and emerge out of this minicamp and emerge out of training camp."

Coupling inexperience with the installation of a new defense has made the process even more difficult.

"Very slow," Merritt said of how it's progressing. "Very slow leadership, as far as making calls, controlling the defense. If I give you a call and I tell you, 'These are the checks and this is what I need you to do. If you see this formation, this is what you check to,' the guys right now that I have are very slow at making those checks."

In colleague Chris Wesseling's analysis of the weakest defensive groups in the NFL earlier this month, he mentioned the Giants' safeties were just ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the bottom. So far, nothing this offseason has improved that ranking for Big Blue.

I take all analysts with a grain of salt. They are projecting their (the writers) gut feelings which is worth about as much as a fistful of dried assholes.

I think Collins will be a stud and Taylor is going to surprise. I'd wait until they played a few games before judging them a disaster...or "the second worst in the NFL". I think Collins is going to be on a mission. He's pissed that he was passed up on the 1st round and he wants to show the other teams they fucked up big time. I hope he's the second coming of Sean Taylor.

I think this defense is going to be worse than last years team.

Oh ye of little faith.

I feel just the opposite. With Spags on board - a more aggressive style defense - an improved line against the rush - Kennard taking over as leader of the LBs (and I think JT Thomas is going to surprise a lot of people in a good way) - a healthy Prince and Rogers-Cromartie....I think there'll be drastic improvement.

If we start having injuries again - then all bets are off. If we stay healthy, we'll be very competitive.

It'll be a boom or bust defense in my opinion. Possibly even week to week. We'll be agressive and get beat in spots. We'll be agressive and win in spots. Either way, I like the agressive approach. It's kinda like...we're doing SOMETHING. We might be inconsistent in the overall effect/impact, but we're at least trying to do something.

I think after reflecting on the Fewell years, that might have been my biggest issue. When we were struggling, it didn't appear as if anything was ever really done to fix it. Just stick to the plan, it'll work...approach.

Confidence is low because the team barely meets expectations that are low. Lost so many games and players in the last two years only an optimist can see there was plenty of good in there as well.

I can live with that. These days, its too much to expect a shut down, smothering defense. I'm okay giving up the big play if they're also disrupting drives; giving up the quick score is better than giving up a score after a long drive, i.e., Perry Fewell's death by a thousand papercuts defense.

"Death by a thousand papercuts" indeed...what a great line :LMAO:

Yeah, but this was secondary coach Dave Merritt saying it.

Pretty sure that's a microaggressive statement.

Heard about the safety out in San Diego not being happy with his contract. Giants were mentioned as a potential, albeit unlikely, trade partner. I don't think we're at a point where we need to trade for a safety. I'd rather go to the season with Collins, Taylor, Berhe, and Mykkele.

I've liked Weddle since he was at Utah...haven't heard anything about Chargers really wanting to trade him and I believe if they did it would be a high asking price, which is hard to justify considering you can just wait until he becomes a FA next offseason. He'll be 31 and going on his third deal and you'll be giving up something in trade value, plus having to pay him
