Former Gaints' safety Stevie Brown just cut by the Texans - should we take him?

Houston just cut Stevie Brown. The Giants have lost 4 safeties for the season so far and only picked up Merriweather.

Almost seems like a no brainer. I doubt Brown could put up the numbers he did a few years ago for the Giants, but at least he has NFL experience and could be a solid backup. I have not heard of any injuries or setbacks so not sure why he's cut.

He's still only 28 years old, so he's right at the peak of his physical and athletic growth. He should be good for a couple of years.

I think the Giants should pull the trigger on this one. The Giants aren't the only team in desperate need of a safety and he will be gone quickly.

Do it Reese!

Unfortunately he is no better than what we already have on the roster in Jeromy Miles and Brandon Merriweather. If the Giants lose another safety to injury, they will bring Stevie Brown in.

Giants are scraping the bottom of the barrel just to make it through preseason.

I think back to last season when Fewell had to scrap his planned defense by the end of September. Spagnuolo's defense might not make it to September.

I'm sure that in hindsight, the Giants probably wish they resigned Antrel. However, they thought he would command superstar bucks on a mulit-year contract and he'll be 33 years old this season. Not a great age for a team to heavily invest in. The Giants wanted to get younger rather than tie up their money in players on the downslide...especially for more than a 1-year contract.

Was it a mistake? In hindsight, probably yes. But everyone is a genius in hindsight. The Giants thought they had a legitimate shot at Devin McCourty but it blew up on them. McCourty was 5 years younger than Rolle and his best years ahead of him, not behind him. The Giants were super, super lucky to end up getting Landon Collins even if he doesn't have NFL experience. He will in short time.

Regardless - the Giants tried, they failed, and now they have to make do with what they can.

Not sure why there is hatred for Stevie. He did a fabulous job for the Giants in 2012/13. If you forgot, here's a write up on him:

While replacing an injured Kenny Phillips for the early part of the 2012 NFL season, Brown led the entire NFL in takeaways at seven, with five interceptions and two fumble recoveries as of October 28, 2012 (through week 8). In the eighth week on October 28 against the Dallas Cowboys, Brown had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The following day, he was named National Football Conference (NFC) Defensive Player of the Week. Against the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees on December 9, Brown had 2 interceptions and a forced fumble and established a Giants franchise record for single-season interception return yards (259). On December 30 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Brown returned a Michael Vick forward pass 48 yards to ignite a 42–7 rout, earning him a second NFC Defensive Player of the Week recognition on January 2.

He finished the season with 307 return yards, which ranked as the fourth highest single-season total in NFL history. His 8 interceptions, which was second in the NFL, was the most by a Giant in a season since the 1968 Giants got 10 interceptions from Willie Williams and 8 from Spider Lockhart. In addition, this led the entire NFL, with near twice as many yards as second-place Ronde Barber of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brown signed his $2.023 million one-year restricted free agent tender on March 19, 2013.

During a pre-season game on August 24, 2013 against the New York Jets, Brown tore the ACL in his left knee and missed the entire season. He then signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent.

Can't hurt to see if he's got something left in the tank. He's 28 years old, so he's not over the hill in football terms. I suppose it all boils down to how well he's come back from his ACL injury.

At this point in the preseason, we have to kick some tires out there to fill some holes for bench players.

And then there was 2014 season which is the reason why he couldn't make the roster in Houston. Unfortunately we are kicking the tires on players who will likely end up starting for us this season.

The thing about Rolle was that he was a proven leader on the field for the Giants....and could stay healthy ( he missed 1 game in 9 NFL seasons ) .

Jerry could have found a decent deal for him ....and he blew it.

Now we are in considerable trouble at safety. ( The Dallas game could get really ugly )

I get why Rolle is no longer here and if he was still here we would only be slightly better off. Jerry could have gotten Rolle a deal if Rolle didn't take the first one he got in Chicago. Hell Rolle could have gotten a lot more money if he simply waited for Devin McCourty to come off the market.

Not really... The guy got too much credit and was way overpaid...

Most certainly. Advertised was a guy who provided leadership and provided turnovers. The results were decent run support, questionable/debatable leadership, no play making ability, mediocre support to cornerbacks, and very little turnovers. He was the mike barrow free agent pickup of safeties and you guys want him back? Come on. You can get that kind of production with a much higher ceiling out of Landon Collins. Rolle was never terrible but he was at his best when his name wasn't getting called...because when it was, he missed an assignment or missed a tackle. He was no ed reed-physical presence on the field, either. I'm perfectly fine not paying him a dime.

Stevie Brown was an interception magnet when he was with us. It was almost like the opposition QBs kept following him and he made plays time and again for us. Until the ACL tear. He will be an excellent support in this dilapidated secondary and would be welcome addition - he will probably take veteran's minimum anyway.

Patricia Traina retweeted Javier Giants

TV confirmed Brown took a physical. generally teams don't send a player for a physical unless intent is to sign.

Patricia Traina added,

Well honestly since the Giant's were down to no name college players might as well bring back someone familiar.

Honestly though we may have been better off luring Demps out of retirement.

if that is the other option, woohoo we got Stevie Brown back!
