Gints tag JPP

The Giants have placed a franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported the team's decision Monday, per a source informed, and added that it will cost Big Blue roughly $17 million to retain its defensive end.

Pierre-Paul signed a one-year, $10 million deal with New York this past offseason following his post-fireworks surgery, and racked up 7.0 sacks in 12 games in 2016.

He will be facing another prove-it season with this upcoming campaign, however. The pass-rushing specialist told Garafolo in January that he will not sign another one-year contract.

The defensive lineman is ranked No. 10 on Around The NFL's top 101 free agents list, but just like last offseason's top-10 appearance, he wasn't unable to cash in on a long-term deal. Father Time isn't exactly on the 28-year-old pass rusher's side either.

JPP's potential displeasure with the Giants' inability to show him a commitment for the long haul could lead to an offseason full of questions, or worse, in the Big Apple.

17 million against the cap.

Should of just let him walk.

Heard on NFL radio the Giants hope to work out a long term deal for less than the $16.5M he'd get on the tag deal......but it isn't going to be much less. Supposedly, there are other teams lurking. Jags (and TC) have $71M to spend and DE is one of their most glaring needs.

I thought even with a deal the tag still stands and he'll make 17 million regardless.

Let the Jags overspend on JPP.

They have Jackson and prob haven't given up on fowler. My concern is them as competition for O-linemen

Good. Gives them time to negotiate and if he signs elsewhere we get 2 first rounders.

Lock him up.

Nobody is going to hand over 2 first round picks. Now with this tag hanging on JPP you have to wonder how much money is left to improve the offensive line?

You have to wonder if the Gints are going with the whole "Spend money like a muh fucker" to milk Eli's last couple of seasons before he's gone.

I mean this move doesnt make sense from a down the road point of view, since there is zero guarantee that JPP signs a long term contract.

I just don't know what direction JR is trying to take this team.

I think the spending spree is over. We do not have the money to spend like we did last year in free agency. It might be another 10 years before the Giants spend like that. I think a transition tag would have been better than a franchise tag at this point. We need players at other positions and if we can get another team to spend enough money on Jason Pierre-Paul, that would be one less team we compete with in free agency. Nobody is going to give up two first round picks for JPP. He does not want to sign a one year deal and wants a big long term contract the Giants should not offer him.

We have been down this road once already with JPP and it is time to move on.

So we basically have no money left to being in a substantial OL. We're sacrificing an OL (and an offense in general) this season to bring back JPP, plus we likely won't have money to re-sign two other starters, Hankins and Robinson (two more gaps).

Best case scenario, we're a fringe wild-card team at best, one that once again has an inept offense which will struggle to put up 16 points per game, a gassed defense (which consequently will likely be shredded again at critical moments, like with GB TWICE), and can't really make a playoff run.

Exactly.

Yeah I'd love to keep Hankins but this is one of the better OL free agency classes in a while. Improving the line makes us a Super Bowl contender so that's gotta be what we focus on and reese will prob want to keep at least half our cap with Beckhams extension coming down the road

I don't see where the money is coming from for a decent OL. We had ~$33mm before Deossie and JPP. Likely after them, that looks like $15mm remaining. We don't have a kicker, so let's say $14mm. Where is the money coming from to get a decent lineman, other than ~$3mm from JT Thomas? We need more than one lineman too. If we do end up spending most of the rest on OL, that leaves little left for dealing with MLB and DT, so again we opened up two gaps on defense).

Are draft pics already factored into this? If not, drop another $5-6mm.

We basically have four starter gaps compared to last year:

- Two OL (and if you address via the draft, their will be rookie mistakes this season, especially with this OL class)

- MLB

- DT (maybe Bromley and Rob Thomas step up?)

Backups

- Gaps at OL, WR, and LB

Plus I still say we don't really have a starting caliber TE.

I think they're done throwing big money at the defense and will draft a DT and assume Robinson will be cheap. Clady, beachem and maybe whitworth might be had on relatively cheap short term contracts due to age and injuries. I really don't know what the market is for them though. But if we got someone like that then they'd prob think flowers can hold it down on the right side

He can sign and play for us 1 year under the tag.

He can refuse to sign and sit out all year, and if I remember correctly, the Giants don't have to pay him should he do that.

He can sign with another team whereas we would get 2 first round picks.

He can negotiate a multi-year deal with us.

The tag gives 100% of the power to the team and it's likely why players hate it.

If they're going to address the OL in free agency with remaining cap, and if they're willing to invest in more than just backups, then my guess is they'll let Hankins walk since they can't afford both. It's not a bad scenario. In that scenario, I hope we:

- Two starting caliber OL (we need a T and a G; we currently have holes here)

- Re-sign Keenan Robinson if we can get him cheap

Draft priorities are then:

- OL

- DT

- TE

- LB

- WR

- RB

- DB

It's highly unlikely he plays this year on the tag.

Hopefully a longer deal is reached soon. If one is reached his cap hit this year will probably be a good deal less than what it is under the tag.

My guess is it's something like 3-4 years, 15 million per year...so maybe the first year cap hit is ~10-12 million at best...so that could be approximately a ~5-7mm savings in the cap. There's Hankins, I think.
