Giants Sign TE Kellen Davis

For all the spending the Giants had done in free agency, they still had a glaring hole in their "broken" offense. Finally, at least part of that hole has been filled.

The Giants signed tight end Kellen Davis to a one-year contract on Friday, according to multiple league sources, giving them a big, blocking tight end that they desperately need. The 28-year-old hasn't been much of a receiver in his six-year career, catching just 50 passes -- including only three last year. But at 6-7, 265 he is a good blocker.

It's also possible he could be a sleeper as a receiver, since two years ago then-Bears coach Lovie Smith said Davis is a "skilled enough of an athlete" to be a featured tight end.

The Giants currently don't have an obvious starter at the position since they let last year's starter, Brandon Myers, go via free agency. They also haven't re-signed their blocking tight end, Bear Pascoe, who is still a free agent.

Davis joins veteran Daniel Fells, who actually has 92 career catches in his six NFL seasons, second-year pro Larry Donnell and third-year pro Adrien Robinson, a fourth-round pick in 2012 whom Giants GM Jerry Reese famously dubbed "The JPP of tight ends", but who is still looking for his first NFL catch.

I am more surprised we didn't take more of a look at Owen Daniels prior to his recent signing...but Davis should serve us well.

I'm anticipating the RBs catching passes in the middle of the field more this year than last.

I think of him as the only TE on the roster at this point. Larry Donnell is just not impressive at all and Adrien Robinson at this point is probably the most irrelevant player the Giants have drafted ever. I really liked the pick two years ago but two years later he has only played in three games? Love the cutting grass jokes but its turf out there so what else does he do besides take up a roster spot?

It also seems to me that they are real serious about protecting Eli and have put some huge lineman and now a huge blocking TE in front of him. There's some serious beef in front of Eli now. TC had stated that our O-line was too small and wore down in games. Must be they believed it because they've gone for pure mass.

i like daniels too but he gets hurt every year and maybe that's what scared them away. maybe they plan on drafting a pass catching TE

I didn't know about Daniels injury history...but I knew something must've been up for him to have sat out there for this long.

Pass catching TE vs blocking TE is the same to me as when we screwed around with RBs. One player in the lineup often times gives the play away (run or pass). I'm not a fan. Need a guy who can catch AND block to actually take advantage of the TE or RB position.

Who knows what this guy is capable of.. he has the frame to toss LBs around and at fucking 6 7" should be able to catch anything thrown high... Jason Witten is probably the slowest TE in the NFL yet he gets open... I don't see why not this guy. I love this signing.

Really?

My first thought was, there is our Bear Pascoe replacement.

Yep...with maybe a slight increase in pass catching ability...emphasis on slight.

Before this pickup, I'd have argued that we needed Ebron in the first. Now, we don't need him. Would Ebron be an upgrade, perhaps. But he's not a must have anymore.

Decent blocker, can't catch a cold.....that's the assessment out here in Chicago.....then again, Bears fans are pretty rough on ex-Bears.

I'd prefer a good blocker who can catch, but if I had to choose, I'll take a TE who can block, v. one who can catch.

I'm sorry, did I read this correctly?

Adrien Robinson, a fourth-round pick in 2012 whom Giants GM Jerry Reese famously dubbed "The JPP of tight ends", but who is still looking for his first NFL catch.

I dunno about that, pretty sure Jake Ballard was the slowest moving target up field to date.

Ballard was basically a 5th offensive lineman in college. In fact, he was the first tight end in history to win the coveted award in the Big Ten for the best offensive lineman.

Davis was used the same way in college - a 5th offensive lineman. And I'm sure that the way Eli had 1.2 seconds to throw the ball off his heels has something to do with this signing. TC/Reese is adding extra beef all over that front line.

You did.

The guy is a bust......classic example of Reese falling for the Magic Beans.....a guy who didn't do shit but runs fast, looks good in a weight room, etc. It's basically the same reason that Reese blew a 4th on James Brewer.....he was picked because he's huge. His college career was spotty, and that's being generous.

Parcells talked about this sort of player a while back. I'm paraphrasing here, but essentially: "If you have a guy who didn't do anything in college, what makes you think he's going to do anything at the pro level?"

And yet you want a TE just like Robinson in this draft.
