Giants sign Ayers

Interesting. I thought we were in cap hell, yet we've opened up the purse and are spending like there is no cap.

This guy sounds like a decent pickup. I doubt he will be "Tuck in his heyday", but he's a run stuffer and gets to the QB now and then. He will probably rotate with Kiwi and Moore...or perhaps they plan on working him opposite Kiwi with Moore rotating.

Seems the old NASCAR game plan of being the sack-machine is moving towards a run stuffing team with a top notch secondary to keep the air game in check. Probably a good thing as every team figured out our old game plan and either threw the ball quicker or ran it down our throats as we came with everything we had after the QB.

Training camp competition... good move.

They signed him for 2-years. Doesn't seem like training camp fodder to me. He's coming from a team that just went to the superbowl and was a no.1 draft pick (18th overall) in 2009. I don't see this as dumpster diving.

Could be a huge signing if he can build on 5.5 sacks last year. I think it's certainly a rotation move as I don't necessarily see him starting.

My only concern on this one is how much Moore will be held back now because of this move. I like the move, but I don't want it to come at the expense of hindering a developing player.

Not what I meant... He'll prove his worth in TC and if not, he and anyone who doesn't will be cut.

Former first rounder. Was kind of a bust but worth a shot for sure

I think that people (especially Giants fans) rate DE's by the number of sacks they have under their belt. This guy is not a "sack master" (although he did get 5.5 sacks last year even though he wasn't starting), but has a reputation as a run stuffer supreme - in fact, rated as one of the best DE's in the league for stopping the run (which will really come in handy in the Red Zone or goal line stands). And he also has NFL experience playing inside as a DT, which gives us flexibility. He also has a lot of QB pressures, but he's a guy who focuses on stopping the run first and then going after the QB.

With Demontre Moore being known as a "sack machine" (in college anyway), it is a nice person to rotate in and out depending on the situation. I have a hunch this guy will get a lot more playing time than many think and if he plays well, will end up taking Kiwi's starting spot away. Just thinking out loud.

Agreed.....if you can't stop the run, you are fucked.

I like it. Takes one more need off the board. He stops the run well and he can be an effective pass rusher. Very solid rotational player.

How old is he? Sounds like a replacement for Tuck.

28 years old. He may not be a sack-machine, but he sacked Tom Brady in the AFC Championship game last season which is not an easy thing to do.

Here's a write up from Valentine:

It's not a sexy signing, nor are many that the Giants have made this offseason. Eli Manning remains the face of the franchise. Tom Coughlin is still the coach. Most of the changes have been to the middle and lower parts of the team, but they have been important, foundational changes that have remade this roster.

Losing Justin Tuck and Linval Joseph hurts, especially for a team that likes to stockpile defensive line talent. Ayers is not as good as either of them, but the former first-round pick is 28 years old, a good run defender and started to play some really solid football last season for the Broncos, especially after Von Miller went down. Ayers can fill multiple techniques along the line.

And suddenly, the Giants are not pigeonholed into one position with the No. 12 overall pick in the draft. They have signed four cornerbacks, four offensive linemen, four linebackers, three running backs, two defensive linemen, a safety and a wide receiver, so really, anything is in play. We know the Giants under Reese have shown a best-player-available approach, especially with their first-round picks, so we can't assume that they will lean to the offensive side for sure with that pick, as some have speculated.

But the good news for the Giants is that they have shed some dead skin, grown another layer and have — very quietly — improved their football team at its foundation, even if the work is far from done to return to a Super Bowl-level roster.

According to KFFL:

"...two-year deal is believed to be worth around $4 million, according to a source. The deal includes $1.75 million in guarantees and is packed with incentives".

I love contracts "packed with incentives"!
