BleedinBlue
The Yanks finished their drafting and picked up 50 new faces to feed into the farm system. They took: Right-handed pitchers 21 Left-handed pitchers 7 Catchers 4 Infielders 5 Outfielders 13 ------------------------------------ Interestingly, they took shortstops in both the 1st and 2nd rounds. That tells me they are wanting to groom Jeter's eventual replacement. The Yanks took a lot of criticism for taking Cito Culver with their first pick, but there's a lot of hype around the 17 year old switch-hitting high school phenom and he was considered one of the top 3 SS prospects in the nation, with the other two already off the board with the 3rd and 4th overall picks. Bryce Harper was the first SS taken off the board by the Nationals and recieved more hype than Culver from Baseball America because a) he hits with more power and b) he's a bonefide candidate to become a catcher. Culver has also been used as a pitcher and has a mid-90's fast ball. From BleacherReport: "Culver certainly has the tools to accomplish this daunting task. The switch-hitter batted .561, had 9 HR's, and 38 RBIs in 22 games, according to his high school's website. The shortstop also had a .933 fielding percentage, and only committed eight errors in 120 chances. The multidimensional Culver also seems to have a pitching arm, although he identifies himself as a shortstop. The chameleon pitches righty, and has reached 94 mph on the mound. Culver has held his high school team's Most Valuable Player award for the three seasons, and played for the Yankees Area Code Team this past summer. He previously committed to the University of Maryland, but there has been talks about him being willing to forgo that deal in order to play for the Yankees". Culver huge fan of Jeter - could sign quickly Regardless, here's a complete list of the Yankee's draftees: 1 (#32) Cito Culver SS Irondequoit HS (N.Y.) 2 (#82) Angelo Gumbs SS Torrance HS (Calif.) 3 (#112) Robert Segedin 3B Tulane University 4 (#145) Mason Williams CF West Orange HS (Calif.) 5 (#175) Thomas Kahnle RHP Lynn University 6 (#205) Gabe Encinas RHP St. Paul HS (Calif.) 7 (#235) Taylor Anderson CF Woodlawn School (La.) 8 (#265) Kyle Roller 1B East Carolina University 9 (#295) Taylor Morton RHP Bartlett HS (Tenn.) 10 (#325) Benjamin Gamel CF Bishop Kenny HS (Fla.) 11 (#355) Zachary Varce RHP University of Portland (Ore.) 12 (#385) Daniel Burawa RHP St. Johns University 13 (#415) Christopher Austin C Heritage HS (Ga.) 14 (#445) Travis Dean RHP Newton South HS (Mass.) 15 (#475) Chase Whitley RHP Troy University 16 (#505) Evan Rutckyj LHP St. Josephs HS (Windsor, Ontario) 17 (#535) Preston Claiborne RHP Tulane University 18 (#565) Kevin Jacob RHP Georgia Tech 19 (#595) Kevin Jordan CF Northside HS (Ga.) 20 (#625) Michael Ferraro LF University of San Diego 21 (#655) Dustin Hobbs RHP Yavapai College 22 (#685) Trevor Johnson LHP College of the Desert 23 (#715) Shane Brown C Central Florida 24 (#745) Conor Mullee RHP St. Peters College (N.J.) 25 (#775) Casey Stevenson 2B University of Calif.
