Rumor Mill - Yanks pursuing Cliff Lee

Personally, I like our pitching staff right now. I'd be tempted to put our pitchers in this order (Ace - Fifth starter):

1) Hughes

2) Sabathia

3) Petite

4) Vazquez

5) Burnett

I'm sure some of you guys are wondering why I have Vazquez ahead of Burnett, but I think Javier has better stuff and better control than Burnett. I think Burnett would be the ace or no.2 of most staffs, so calling him our 5th starter is a real luxury.

Regardless, I've heard from 3 different places that the Yanks are working a deal to get Cliff Lee. The Yanks are denying it, but the story keeps popping up.

My question is, "what do we do with him if we get him?" I suppose one of our starters would have to move into long or middle relief, but I just don't know. It seems the staff is pretty good right now, in fact, really good. Of course, we're always one pitch away from an injury, but usually we don't make a move until that happens.

Any ideas on what moves are made should Lee don pinstripes?

it makes absolutely zero sense for the yankees to acquire lee...the mariners do not want Vazquez in return, they want to shed Lee's salary and grab young, cheap talent....so if the yankees trade for lee, that means theyre gonna have put to someone in the bullpen..and the only guy that you can justify putting there due to salary, has been this seasons best pitcher..Hughes. you cant put a guy who makes 13 million a year in the bullpen who isnt named Mariano, its ridiculous.

Lee is going to be a free agent, if the yankees want him, thats when they will get him...when vaz is gone and maybe pettite and theyre gonna need a pitcher.

Yeah I am not a fan of losing talent to gain a player in a position we don't have a strong need in and especially when we could get him in the offseason.

And based on your staff rotation I'm guessing you are going on recent performance? Cause if that is the case Sabathia should probably be #3 with Petitte #2, and with how he has been pitching lately Vasquez above Sabathia as well...hell Sabathia has been so craptastic lately he is the #5.

The way I look at it as of now:

1. Pettitte

2. Sabathia

3. Hughes

4. Vasguez

5. Burnett

I trust Pettitte and Sabathia the most in big games against good hitting line ups.

Hughes hasn't been going after the hitters like he did in the beginning of the season. I'm hoping it's just growing pains. He still needs a put away pitch. I really think he should change speeds a lot more to make his fast ball more effective.

Vasguez? I'm still skeptic. He's been better, but he hasn't faced anyone lately. That goes for Hughes, too.

Burnett either sucks completely or is terrific. It all depends if he can put the ball where he wants it.

Yeah, I agree with most things you say except that Sabathia has been slipping.

The NY media (and fans) were really down on Vasquez early on, but he's got some good stuff and he's a killer against national league hitting....which should come in handy during interleague games and also should the Yanks get to the series again.

It's still pretty early in the season to figure out which pitcher is better than the others. Sabathia tends to get better as the season progresses and Petite always seems to rise up big time in really important games.

I have greater concerns with A-Rod and Texiera and Joba's inconsistency. I just hope the little nuance problems iron themselves out over the long haul. I'd like to have Lee on the staff, but like it was pointed out earlier, there's just no place for him right now and he'll be available in the off season. The kicker on that though, is that if the Sox are trying hard to get him, the Yanks might make a play for him just to keep him away from them. But if they do, then they've got too many starters. A good problem to have I suppose.

I wouldn't mind trying to get Lee for future purposes. Meaning, Pettite is retiring after this season for sure.

If Petite is still going half way strong by the end of the season, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he came back for another season.....especially if the Yanks are back in the series and look like a lock for the next year. Heck, if he's not the man he used to be, he could become 5th in the rotation and pick up 14-16 wins with an ERA in the high 3's, and you know he'd reach back and be unstopable come post season. Not bad for a number 5 guy.

I don't think I'd count Petite out on returning until he breaks down and has injury problems or he just plain can't get people out anymore.

The New York Post 's Joel Sherman reports the Yankees are "on the brink" of getting Cliff Lee from the Mariners. Sherman doesn't attribute the report to any source other than his own report, but says New York will give up top prospect, catcher Jesus Montero.

Sherman's report does hedge its bets, saying "The Yanks were not assured of obtaining Lee since other clubs such as the Mets, Twins and Rangers were in talks."

I don't think Arizona would be a buyer. Not for a 30s starter, even one with an impressive NL record. The team I've heard was Phillies for Werth...but where does he play? We have our outfield for the next few years locked up in Gardy/Grandy/Swish.
