Giants' Eli Manning-Davis Webb mess could lead to offseason QB nightmare scenario

The Giants' quarterback situation is, to be kind, a convoluted mess that makes any logical observer's head hurt. But rather than rehash all that has transpired the past two weeks, let us look forward, and consider the potential disaster scenario that could await the team this offseason.

A good deal would have to fall into place for the Giants' quarterback nightmare to become reality, but the fact each projected event along the way is very plausible as a standalone event should give the team pause.

Here is how the Giants' twice-botched quarterback situation could grow into a major crisis this spring, step by step:

Eli Manning remains starter, Davis Webb does not play in 2017: Interim coach Steve Spagnuolo basically said this is the plan on Monday. He has no plans to move away from Manning, and he said ownership has not spoken to him about it, even though the team seemed on-board with seeing Webb play two weeks ago when Manning was initially benched to start this debacle.

Manning demands out: The Giants have left the door open for their new general manager and coach to say they want Manning back in 2018, and it's not hard to imagine the team, if it is again determined to make Manning a Giant for Life just weeks after ruining his consecutive starts streak, might be vetting how job candidates feel about Manning.

However, here's a curveball: The new regime's opinion never matters, because Manning remembers what the Giants are trying to get people to forget. Which is that the team betrayed him. Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese got fired after benching him, but only after co-owner John Mara let it happen. Manning is a good soldier to the end, but with a no-trade clause and a $5 million roster bonus due in March, he has the leverage to force his way out of East Rutherford and to a contender. Which in this exercise, he does, departing the franchise.

Sam Darnold stays in school: The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL Draft is January 15, or around the time the Giants would likely be in range to finalize their hires. It could be a wave of less-than-ideal developments for the new guys if the promising USC quarterback decides to stay in school, taking an option off the table for April's 2018 NFL Draft, while Manning begins to engineer his escape.

The Giants are forced to spend their Manning savings on a veteran quarterback: Yes, they will have saved about $10 million in cap space by moving on from Manning. But they will need to add a veteran - think Ryan Fitzpatrick or someone of his caliber - who makes good money since Webb, who was not given a single regular season snap despite being an able-bodied member of perhaps the worst Giants year ever, cannot be counted on as a Week 1 starter, especially with the draft results still undecided.

The Giants fail to draft a quarterback: Call it the perfect storm. The Giants have the second pick, but the Browns take their favored quarterback with the No. 1 pick, and the Giants find themselves stuck. They have off-field and/or on-field qualms about the remaining top signal callers (which seems possible given this year's class), they don't have any great trade-up value - teams realize they don't need to buy that high to get a quarterback - and they find themselves taking a non-quarterback.

The Giants will be getting a great prospect, and one that can help them. But he won't be a quarterback. Reality will then set in: Eli Manning is gone, the franchise quarterback has not come to pass in the draft, and now the Giants are heading toward the season with a guy who has never played in a game (Webb) and an older journeyman who makes a lot of money and has no long-term future (Fitzpatrick, etc.).

It's not what you want.

At some point Davis Webb has to play this season... and i'm not talking about 1 half or just one game...

lol what a stupid article, click bait at it's finest.

How about the new GM/HC decide what to do, and literally none of these scenarios are bad in any sort of way.

Eli Manning remains starter, Davis Webb does not play in 2017 - Who cares the new HC/GM might not even want either of them on the team.

Manning demands out - So the new GM will have more money to play with and they either go with Webb or Jackson/Donald/Rosen or a veteren that the new HC wants.

Sam Darnold stays in school - Once again who cares if the new GM/HC dont want the kid? Maybe they want Jackson or some other singal caller more, or if Eli and Webb stay they can use the pick on some other impact player. Not to mention Darnold wont start day one.

The Giants are forced to spend their Manning savings on a veteran quarterback - Because veteran QBs are nothing but scrubs? And if it's a guy the new HC/GM are familiar with it could be better all around, this team isnt going to the playoffs in 2018, let's accept that fact now.

The Giants fail to draft a quarterback - And once again who cares? If the new GM/HC dont feel like a QB is needed and they roll with Eli/Webb/FA QB that's what they do, this team isnt going anywhere in 2018 and we get to pick a guy like Barkley.

So where's the nightmare in any of this? The team is 2-11, how much worse can it get?

lol

Eli Manning is more likely to retire then demand his release. Davis Webb playing is more for the fans than anything else. If the Giants decide to draft a QB, it will happen regardless of Manning still being on the roster and Webb not playing a snap.

Giants don't have to go hunting for a veteran QB, Geno Smith is still here to carry the clipboard.

A new front office needs to be hired, then a coach, then decisions made about the roster. Katch can just keep reprinting that last sentence and turn them into page long articles till one of those things happens.

I sort of think playing Webb will only be good for Webb.

Even if he comes in and lights it up... will that really affect the draft philosophy of the team in April? I don't think a 2-3 game sample size good or bad is enough to make a decision regarding the most important position on the team.

Geno is as good as gone... the Giants will hold on to Webb and Eli and if they draft a QB, that's your 3rd right there...

Aha... maybe the Giants are afraid he's going to light up and fuck up our draft positioning.... Fuck it... keep him on the bench

This is a shit show of a season with no good answers at the QB spot.

Well we have a rookie who did well in college... we don't know what he's made of at the pro level yet... so it's not all lost... depending on how many top QBs are available in the draft (I think one of the top two prospects hasn't declared and my elect to stay in school)... I do think Webb has to see the field at some point....

Or we could take one of the 3 top QB names in this draft, fix the OL and depth issues in free agency and have Manning groom the rookie on his way out the door for a smooth transition...

From what I've read there isn't 3 good QBs (worthy of top 5 pick) in this draft... there's one and one maybe joining the draft...

A lot will change between now and the draft. If mayfield balls out in the playoffs the quote unquote experts will have him in the top ten

Yeah I thought I remembered people saying two years ago it was a weak QB class, but Wentz and Goff both look pretty good.

Rosen... Darnold is undecided and the Manning family is in love with Josh Allen. We can also trade back if the deal is worth it.

Tell us more about Josh Allen... and what does the Manning family have to do with this?

Imo Allen needs work, but he has the tools to be great. He moves around well in the pocket and has the ability to throw on the run. The problem lies in his team is underwhelming and they play in the MWC.

The reason the Manning family is significant in this is Eli might actually have some input into who we draft and from what I've heard, Archie, Peyton and Eli all seem to love the kid.

Granted, aside from the few highlights I've seen idk much about him cause I couldn't care less about Wyoming football... and im on the Rosen bandwagon atm, but considering the entire family gave this kid their seal of approval there might actually be something there.

Josh Allen was at the Manning Passing Academy over the summer. I am intrigued by Allen, hes raw only 630 pass attempts and stats aren't great , but were talking Wyoming http://trib.com/sports/college/wyoming/football/josh-allen-headed-to-manning-passing-academy-as-camp-counselor/article_f58da20f-eca2-5f93-8158-b458b4902ab0.html

Sam Darnold was also at the Manning Passing Academy

Darnold honestly may be a once in a lifetime type and that's where I think they go

Yea... Darnold is heading to Cleveland... but what strikes me is both Darnold and Rosen have high INT numbers, no?
