The NFL suspended New York Giants linebacker Victor Butler for the first four games of the 2015 season for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

A fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2009, Butler was a rotational player, compiling 89 tackles and 11 sacks in four seasons in Dallas. He then signed on with the New Orleans Saints, but tore his ACL prior to the 2013 season and never played a snap with the team.

Butler spent last season briefly in Arizona before being cut by the Cardinals. He then signed with the Indianapolis Colts and appeared in two games compiling two tackles.

The 27-year-old signed a futures contract with the Giants this offseason. Butler was a long shot to make Big Blue's roster coming out of training camp.

Butler can participate in OTAs, training camp and the preseason before sitting out the first four games of the year.
