after saying the yankees won't even make the playoffs because their team revolves around offense, he says the rockies will win the NL wild card because they have the best offense among other teams competing for it...

he explained that the yankees won't make the playoffs because their pitching is bad yet it has only gotten better since the beginning of the season, moose is one of the hottest pitchers in the AL and we just bought up hughes who is sooo much better than igawa as a 5th starter. not to mention we have joba who is lights out in the BP and clemens, pettite and wang who have all been fine. so either he hates us or is just an idiot

Steve Phillips = Jackass. Seriously, the guy is a clown, how did he ever manage to land a genral managers job?

Do not be surprised if the Yankees win the AL East by 10 games

Wasn't there an article a few months back in the Ledger on how the Yanks had NO chance at all to make the playoffs so should just tank the season and work on next year? That should tell you the kind of people writing about baseball.

Not true. Saw a stat during yesterday's game that said the Yankees' team ERA is higher post All Star break than it was prior to the break. The difference is, the Yankees are scoring 7+ runs a game.

And Joba may have been lights out for one night, but putting a rookie in an important role at this time of the season is a risky propostion.

I still think Phillips is a moron though.

i dont get the ledger, but that article was in every paper in the country...Tim Kukjian was the only person in the media that never discounted the Yankees and not surprisingly, he's the only one with a brain at espn. he's by far the best espn has in any sport..greg anthony is a distant second. I have no idea what he's doing there still, he's way too good for them

in the yankees last 31 wins, the opposing teams have averaged 3.7 runs per game. Now at the same time, in their last 8 losses, they have given up an average of 7.3 runs per game. So basically, yes they are getting it done with offense, but theyre also pitching pretty well too with the occasional hiccup...see wang last week in toronto.

As far as Chamberlain goes, you have a valid point in saying that throwing a rookie into the fire at this point of season to set up is risky business, but Joba is not your average rookie.

He didn't strike 'em out, he made them look sick, and one of them was Tejada. I would have to agree that he's not your average rookie. The only thing I might be concerned about if I were a Yankee fan is that he was a little too emotional after he struck out Huff. You don't usually want to see a guy in that role showing that much emotion, but he is a kid.

As for Phillips' contention, I'd have to say the Yankee pitching looks pretty good at this point in the season. You have 5 solid starters and lights-out 8th & 9th inning guys (though Mo has looked hittable the last two days).

Mo's been hittable since game 7 of the 2001 World Series.

no, because he's struck out a few orioles, a few indians and a few blue jays. thats 8's k's in 5 innings while allowing one hit and 2 walks. he also struck out 140 in 88 innings in the minor leagues and absolutely dominated every level. Im not talking about putting up good number, his numbers in the minor leagues were downright unbelieveable; a man amongst boys if you will. He was also MVP of the Hawaiin league this past winter. Plus when 6 different american league scouts say that he has the best stuff in the american league and they say theyre aware that John Santana is in the league, then yeah, Id say he's not your average rookie. He is no falsh in the pan, this kid is the real deal...he's better than Hughes

Alot of rookies fare very well when first called upon. Joe Smith comes to mind for Met fans. A few times around the block, and it won't be so easy, especially in the middle of a pennant race. No one can say he's not going to buckle under THAT pressure. We just don't know yet, and it is a precarious situation for the Yankees to be in. Name one fan, manager, or GM who wants their set up man to be a rookie who first saw action in August.

come on thats just silly, you must have missed the 2005 season where he was robbed of the cy young award.

I'm not doubting his ability at all, but you can't expect him to be that good every time, and he is a rookie who may have dominated the minor leagues, but he's never faced a pressure packed situation in Fenway in September with playoff hopes on the line. A rookie called up in August is the last guy you want in that spot.

Maybe second to last, to Guillermo Mota or Aaron Heilman... :brooding:

comparing Joba to Joe Smith is like comparing Pedro Martinez circa 1999 to Casey Fossum

You know as well as I do, Mo has never been the same since then.

I can honestly say, you couldnt be more wrong. He should have won the cy young award in 2005 and that blown save in 2001 was not really his fault. I still have no idea why they would have the infield in that situation. Worse case scenario womack ends up on third with 2 outs.

Have you seen the guy pitch, seriously? And don't say you have if you haven't. This is not Joe Smith throwing guys off for a few months until they figure him out. This is a guy with grade A stuff. Okajima has been great for the Red Sox this year, but I fully expect him to come back to Earth sometime within the next year. Papelbon, on the other hand, you knew was going to be a dominant pitcher from the first time he took the mound as a closer. You could just see the way he blew guys away. I'm telling you, this guy is better than Papelbon because he controls his breaking ball so well.

I could name you 25 GMs and 25 managers at least (and that's only because I haven't taken the time to think about each team) who would take this guy as their 8th inning guy the rest of the way right now.

I would take Mariano Rivera over any closer in baseball at any age, time or place. Man may not be what he was in 98 99, but he is so huge in the big game its not even close.

Truthfully, and I hate to say this because I'm afraid I'll jinx him, but I think I'd rather have Papelbon in a big spot right now than Mo. That's not a knock on Mo, I just think Papelbon is a little more dominant right now (even though he hasn't really pitched in a big spot yet).

thats the thing, I have seen so many of these closers compile these saves against poor teams in the regular season and then spit the bit in the playoffs(see Wagner, Billy)that IMO MO is so good because a)he just does not blow them and b)has been doing it so long. No doubt Papelbon is tremendous. Two things I have with him is can his arm withstand the entire season and playoffs and can he close that big playoff game on the road? Guess we shall see.
