Johnathan Hankins: How and when he proved capable to Giants of replacing Linval Joseph

When the Giants allowed Linval Joseph to walk this offseason with little or no resistance, it became obvious that they viewed last year's second-round pick Johnathan Hankins as his heir apparent.

Nothing that the team has said or done in the months since has altered that line of thinking.

"It's his turn," coach Tom Coughlin said during OTAs. "That's why he's here."

And that is why Joseph is in Minnesota. The decision to let him walk likely occurred late last season, when Hankins got on the field with more regularity. Five of his six biggest workloads came in the final five weeks of the season.

And the Giants liked what they saw from the 6-2, 320-pound run stuffer, who played mostly on first and second downs.

"Hankins really took off at the end of last year and has done a great job in the offseason working out, coming in in really good condition and he's really given them a chance to, both of those guys [Hankins and defensive end Damontre Moore], have really given themselves a chance," defensive line coach Robert Nunn said. "Once we get in pads … we've got to see. They've got to go out there and do it. But I like where they are at now."

Pro Football Focus' grades from last season back Nunn's assessment. Hankins produced positive grades in each of his last five games, with especially high marks as a run defender in the final four.

Hankins finished with an impressive +8.0 overall grade and +9.5 grade against the run last season. Joseph finished with a +9.9 grade for the season and +8.0 as a run defender.

It's a promising sign for an interior of the Giants defensive line that will likely be asking Hankins to start alongside veteran Cullen Jenkins in their base defense. Veteran Mike Patterson appears to be the first choice right now to replace Hankins in pass rushing situation.

But rookie third-round pick Jay Bromley and Markus Kuhn also have a chance to play themselves into the rotation. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell liked what he saw this offseason from Kuhn, who tore his knee late in 2012, but finally appears fully healthy.

"Markus Kuhn came back from the injury last year and played just a little bit last year," Fewell said. "I've been extremely impressed with both of those guys [Kuhn and Hankins].

"They have, technique-wise, accomplished a lot in phase one, phase two and phase three of the offseason program and then just their knowledge of the game, I think they've done a really, really nice job."

Of course, this all needs to be put into perspective. It's still June, and the Giants haven't had a full contact practice yet this year. Linemen can't really be judged until there is hitting.

"You're not going to see anything really to talk about until you get the pads on," Coughlin said.

Kuhn and Hankins will have their chances this summer. Nunn said they'll likely receive a good chunk of the reps at defensive tackle during training camp in order to see where they stand while simultaneously preserving Jenkins and Patterson.

In that case, it shouldn't take long for the Giants to determine if what they saw late last season from Hankins was a true indicator that they made the right decision by allowing Joseph to walk, or whether Joseph will ultimately be missed

Honestly I don't care what they say about the defensive line...They should have kept Linval Joseph and the middle of the defensive line is going to be a problem this season. We will be forced to overreact and it will bite us in the ass. You don't have to be a football coach to see a defensive line being asked to go beyond its capacity.

I'm not sure Joseph was all that... he went to the highest bidder and the Giants were in salary cap hell... you can't sign em all.

Its another case of Giants nation overreacting to another home-grown talent leaving.

Remember Barry Cofield? People around here still fucking cry about that guy. Name the number ofPro Bowls has he made. Name his five big plays in the past five seasons. Name one game-changing play he made.

By late October, nobody (including the rest of the NFL) is going to remember who Linval Joseph is.

And Hankin played very well in the limited time he was on the field... I'm very excited about our DL.. let's face Joseph was overrated and Tuck's best years were like 4 years ago...

Yeah I remember Barry Cofield, he is doing the same solid job for the Redskins he used to do for us. That is exactly what we are going to say about Linval Joseph as well. Linval Joseph wasn't asking to be paid like a superstar but we said no anyway. As long as we do a good job drafting defensive tackles this isn't going to destroy the team. The timer starts on that in September. We are playing against the odds and don't always win.

Consider this: If Marvin Austin became the player the Giants envisioned we would have never drafted Jonathan Hankins and would have most likely gone with an offensive lineman instead that could have been the difference on our offensive line.

Barry went from the giants 4-3 to skins 3-4 NT. A big difference in that role and still able to produce. Linval is young, Why wouldn't we want him to stay? Yeah the asking price was a little high but he wasn't a bench warmer. Dude at least shine under an aged and injured line.

Linval Joseph was a solid player, but my best guess is the coaching staff felt Hankins came on strong at the end of the season.

It would have been pricing to keep him....I would have been happy if they did, but I don't know how the math would work out, and really, offensive line was basically screaming for help.

We should cut everyone who doesn't make the Pro Bowl.

See, I think we should pay top dollar for run-stuffing DTs because they're so hard to find. I pray to God that we Reese puts money away for Chris Canty when he hits the free agent market next season... no wonder we didn't make the playoffs last year.
