Where's the Dexter Lawrence threads?

He was non-existent the first couple games of the season.

I don't know if Bettcher just had him playing something that didnt suit his strength but these last two games he's been dominate on the field.

He's been getting a lot of rave reviews in the press and in the game day threads.

Just need to get a solid rookie book end and suddenly this Dline might be something to be feared in the NFL.

He's just been getting more reps in and getting better with the greater workload. Dline is fine, we need to get the linebacker situation sorted and the DBs working tighter.

I think he was good from the very first snap. The difference now vs. week one is he's playing with his head on a swivel, so you aren't really getting the 'oops' snaps from him now, while back at the start there were several times he just wasn't ready for NFL double teams. But he was fucking people up from the word go though, he oozes talent out there. Folks are just starting to notice because he's had some splash plays lately. The guys that watch the line play already knew what was up: Lawrence is a beast.

Kyle Williams is a good comp, but I see a young Albert Haynesworth… with a better attitude and motor.

Golden is on a one year contract, he keeps playing the way he is, he's getting the money somewhere else.

We need a DE on this team beyond this year, and one who can reliably get pressure on the edge.

So far no one else has stepped up.

I was just saying to a friend this morning that we are one really good DE away from this line being scary.

Should try to extend Golden ASAP. Plenty of cap space coming up soon to do it.

If him/his agent are smart they wait till the offseason after the year he is having.

Go cash in on some massive contract from some team, be it the Giants or elsewhere.

Right now DEs are worth a fortune in FA and teams have to horribly over pay for them or spend a high round pick(s) for one.

Same thing with LT and any decent LB, you gotta over pay for under value.

Golden is strictly an edge rusher.... he'll get paid, but he is NOT a defensive end. That really mitigates his value, it shouldn't take a Vernon level contract to keep him.

And a consideration for his camp, assume we're even interested in extending him mid-season, is that he could get injured before the end of this season, which would cost him millions and millions. So its not like, duh, lets wait for the offseason, its a careful balancing of future potential earnings vs a real pay day today.

No it doesnt.

Guys like Frank Clark (who shares very similar stats to Golden this year) a LB/DE rusher got a 105 million dollar contract. Dee Ford is another example of the DE/LB tweener that Golden is who got 85 million dollar contract. Hell he's out playing guys like JPP and the pair they have with the Vikings right now who are all making over 60 million on their contracts.

And this "He isnt a DE" thing is just silliness, LB/DE hybrids are almost the norm in the NFL, they are still lumped together the same when it comes to contract negotiations.

Also he's FIFTH on the team in tackles, a head of any other DT/DE on the team, so yes he's the best DLINE player we have at the moment, since that is primarily where he rushes/plays from.

I understand what you're saying about waiting till the end of the season due to injury but this scenario has been the oddity in the NFL, not a lot of players (especially FA who sign one year contracts) re sign mid season.

Just logically if he keeps playing the way he is, he would be stupid to not wait till the offseason for a team to over pay for him.

See that's my point, DE isnt priority #1 this offseason, I would rank LB/LT/#1 WR/backup RB higher than that at this point.

But we can't rely on resigning Golden at this point (unless they franchise tag him) and no one else has stepped up.

OX might still take a season or two, and Carter hasn't lived up to the offseason hype.

by saying we need one more good DE, is that a comment on BJ Hill? He's the other DE opposite Lawrence and had a great rookie season last year. Maybe not so great so far in 2019, a little sophomore slump going on there. I still think he's the long term answer.

BJ Hill isnt a "pass rusher" though, he's like Lawrence, he'll push the pocket and help stuff the run, but he wont be the guy who's going to net you more than 6 or so sacks a year.

I'm talking about a guy who can reliably make the opposing QB scramble and worry about standing in the pocket for more than four seconds.

A majority of Hills sacks last year came from the protection breaking down after the QB held the ball to long, mostly coverage sacks.

well, I was about to say that Clark and Ford aren't good comps for Golden, buuut….. holy shit, does Golden really play at 260? I thought he was weighing in at about 240 or 245 just based on how he looks out there, but I think I stand corrected, he really could play DE in a 4-3 just based on his measurables.

Golden was never really a LB though.

The NFL really needs to make a new position or just get rid of the OLB/DE role on rosters.

Just have a LB or DL designation.

I'm willing to bet you put all of Golden's plays back to back he drops back or plays LB maybe 5% of the time.

hah, I wouldn't take that bet, I know you're right.... and I was kind of holding it against Golden too, thinking he was a 240 lb edge guy who could only rush the passer, and wouldn't be of use dropping into coverage or being counted on to set the edge like a 4-3 DE (although of course the OLB in a 3-4 has to set the edge as well, it's just a lot easier when you're set up that much wider than a DE).

I agree though, Golden's measurable don't reflect what he looks like.

From what I've read he's a workout warrior and has been given Barkley a run for his money in the weight room.

Hopefully he wants to stay with Bettcher.

He wants to get paid more I think. I don't know if Gettleman is really interested in dropping a significant amount of money on Markus Golden. We are going to have a significant amount of cleared payroll space for 2020, I'd be surprised if Gettleman is going to start handing out the mega contracts he spent the last two seasons clearing. Are we looking at a super bowl within the next 2-3 years?

that is kind of the point, right?.... got the young QB on a cap friendly deal, now is the time to fill in around him. Not going to get a much better opportunity than the next two or (more likely) three years.

I honestly don't know if the Giants can win a super bowl within that window. I think it is more of a five year plan at this point.

Yeah I think the Giants are far from a won now type attitude.

We have no established defense and a lot of key players are going into contract year shortly.

It's weird to think but if Getty and Shurmur fuck up these next two season we are pretty much back to square one with this team.

Average career is about three years, so things can change very fast... just because we don't see enough pieces on the roster now doesn't mean they can't get there within a two or three year window.

Just keep hitting on draft picks they way they seem to have been the last two seasons and they'll be in the conversation.

I think the whole five year plan thing, teams that think like that never get to the upper echelon because five years is much too long in the NFL.

The problem with teams that try to win now is that it usually never works and ends up putting them in the average range as they try to keep the ship afloat.

Id much rather have sustained success like the Pats, Green Bay, the Rams, etc. Who build up a core of players and keep that core over a longer stretch of time while brining in players from the draft to supplement back up and eventual starting roles.

Look at how the win now mentality served the Giants the last few years or any team that is trying to cash in on rookie contracts or one year runs.

I don't think the problem was the 'win now' mentality, I think the problem was a severe overestimation of the team's talent.
